After by Linda McMullen

After, I lie on my back and see the lights twinkling above me… red, gold, and green, like the song, song, song, swaying through my head. Head… where were we headed? Pretty lights… Jim and I… me, swaying to the music, 80s playlist blaring in my ears… him, teasingly scolding me for not paying attention. Red, gold, and green… Walking toward the pharmacy, for one of those pink plus tests… I feel fine, officer, except my head’s swaying. Left and right. Traffic light. Don’t look. Jim’s over there. All red. I remember now: he pushed me out of the way…
